Welcome to Lessons from “Green Acres”
by Ken B.
Some of you older folks out there might remember a TV show called Green Acres that ran from 1965 through 1971. The basic premise was that a New York lawyer wanted to fulfil his dream of being a farmer and dragged his snobby wife from the Manhatten penthouse to a ramshackle farm, where they had funny misadventures for 6 seasons.
That’s my wife, Kristi’s, and my basic story. We moved from a small subdivision in Round Rock, TX (population 130,000), which is part of the Austin, Texas metroplex, where the houses are so close together you can jump from roof to another to a 5-acre property near Fentress, TX (population 291 as of 2000) about 40 miles southeast of Austin.
This blog talks about lessons I’ve learned (usually the hard way) from maintaining a large property with a 1-acre man-made pond in the middle of nowhere.
Mini-lesson: a man-made pond is called a tank.
